Armenia ready to get closer to EU, Pashinyan reiterates
Armenia is ready to be as close to the European Union as the latter considers it possible, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan reiterated on Monday.
"If I thought that the Armenian people did not share this opinion, I would have made no such statements," Pashinyan announced at the Armenian Forum for Democracy in Yerevan.
At the same time, he questioned the need to hold a referendum on Armenia’s accession to the EU.
Pashinyan argued that a referendum would only lead to further questions, including about the EU’s willingness to accept Armenia.
“They will tell me, "You announced Armenia’s readiness to be as close to the European Union as the latter deems it possible." How ready is the EU for that? I have no answer to this question given the ongoing processes within the EU that need assessments. Elections are being held in EU countries and their outcomes raise at least certain questions,” he added.
