Expert: Turkey repeatedly targeted Armenia's constitution
Since its adoption, the Armenian constitution and its underlying Declaration of Independence have been targeted by Turkey, says Varuzhan Geghamyan, a geopolitical strategist and regional security expert.
In a social media post on Constitution Day marked on 5 July, Geghamyan highlighted that in the 1990s and 2000s, the Turkish authorities repeatedly and unofficially referred to Armenia's constitution.
"After 2020, Turkey officially demanded a change to the constitution of Armenia through Azerbaijan as it saw a good opportunity,” the expert wrote.
“Today, this demand is yet another precondition and coercion among numerous others aimed not at "establishing peace" but at weakening the Armenian statehood.
“Armenia’s constitution includes provisions making the state a geopolitical unit with politically clear national principles, not a province dependent on Turkey. Therefore, Ankara and Baku are attacking it just like the Armenian Diaspora, army, education system, heroes and genocide.
“Armenia's enemies attack the pillars of the state. Accordingly, Constitution Day serves as a good opportunity to remember that this document, despite all its flaws, is one of the symbols and legal foundations of our statehood, which each of us must protect today more than ever," Geghamyan said.
