Opposition politician Mamikon Aslanyan released on bail
Mamikon Aslanyan, an opposition figure from Vanadzor who was arrested after defeating Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s party in a local government election held in December 2021, was released on bail of 10 million drams on Tuesday.
"After 2 years and 7 months of imprisonment, the measure of restraint against political prisoner Mamikon Aslanyan has been changed," his lawyer Ruben Melikyan said on Monday.
Aslanyan, who had served as Vanadzor mayor for five years, was greeted with massive applause as he left the Vardashen Penitentiary.
He expressed gratitude to all those who supported him and his fellow political prisoners and called for their soonest possible release.
Aslanyan has been charged with abuse of office and forgery strongly denied by him as politically motivated.
