Opposition MP comments on failed Pashinyan-Aliyev talks in UK
Opposition lawmaker Tigran Abrahamyan claims that the breakdown of talks between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev in the UK is closely linked to the failure to finalize a border delimitation agreement between the two countries by July 1.
The Armenian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday that Yerevan had offered Baku a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the European Political Community summit at Blenheim Palace, but Azerbaijan had declined the invitation. Earlier on Thursday, Azeri presidential aide Hikmet Hajiyev accused Pashinyan of snubbing talks with Aliyev to be mediated by the UK.
In a social media post on Friday, Abrahamyan stated that at least three matters had influenced the bilateral agenda, including the failure to finalize a border delimitation deal, Azerbaijan’s push for constitutional changes in Armenia and the opening of regional communications which "remains in the spotlight of geopolitical centers."
“Nevertheless, a bilateral meeting could take place in the near future as in many similar situations the Armenian authorities have backed down,” the MP wrote.
