Biden's exit from presidential race to affect Armenia, expert says
U.S. President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race will affect the Armenia-Azerbaijan and Armenian-Turkey normalization processes, political analyst Suren Sargsyan claims.
In a social media post on Wednesday, Sargsyan questioned Azerbaijan’s readiness to conclude a peace agreement with Armenia in the soonest timeframe amid pressure from the U.S. administration that has a few months left.
“Neither the Harris administration nor the Trump administration will prioritize the issue, thus Baku can calmly wait,” he wrote. “The same holds true for the Armenia-Turkey normalization process which the Biden administration was pushing for.”
The expert claimed that the Biden administration advocated the signing a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan before November, since it could be used as Biden’s foreign policy achievement in the run-up to the presidential elections.
“Now these issues have been left up in the air, since no one is afraid of Biden's pressure and no one cares what his “legacy” will be, whether he will remain in history as someone who resolved a historical conflict or not,” Sargsyan said.
“The victory of Trump or Harris implies a new foreign policy with new priorities and actors. Yet another mistake by Armenia was lack of diversification, shortsightedness and miscalculation. After all, it's obvious that neither the Biden administration nor Biden himself would rule forever,” he added, condemning the Armenian government's “disastrous policy of putting all its eggs in one basket".
