Turkish forces tried to invade Stepanakert after ceasefire deal in September 2023, MP says
Armenian opposition MP Tigran Abrahamyan has commented on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s latest statement that Turkey might “enter” Israel as it did with Libya and Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh).
In a social media post on Wednesday, the lawmaker stated that apart from its direct involvement in the 44-day Artsakh war in 2020, Turkey further ensured military presence in Azeri-occupied regions of Artsakh while setting up a joint monitoring center with Russia in Aghdam.
“After the 2020 war, Turkey deployed “commando” battalions in Shushi and Kashatagh for so-called rapid response. Turkish troops were also heavily involved in the September 2023 attack [on Artsakh]. Moreover, they attempted to invade the city of Stepanakert after the ceasefire agreement, but retreated suffering heavy losses,” Abrahamyan wrote, adding that Turkish forces acted on the orders of the Turkish General Staff
“The incident sparked some tensions between Turkey and Azerbaijan at the time and the issue was finally settled after a phone call between the leaders of the two countries,” he added.
