Middle East at risk of military clashes, analyst warns
The killing of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Iran could trigger wider escalation in the Middle East, Armenian political analyst Ara Poghosyan warns.
Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were killed after the building where they were staying was struck, the Palestinian group said, adding that Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the inauguration ceremony of Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday.
“The fact that the attack was carried out in Tehran and that Israel is now believed to be behind it, is already jeopardizing Iran's reputation as well as creating serious security risks,” Poghosyan wrote on Facebook.
“The region could move from statements to active military clashes affecting all of Eurasia.
“Iran is holding an emergency meeting of its National Security Council at the supreme leader's residence. This attack may indeed lead to a deep crisis,” he added.
