Armenian government sets up company to build new nuclear power plant
The Armenian government on Thursday gave a green light to the establishment of a company to construct a new nuclear power plant.
The state-owned company will be established in accordance with the IAEA standards. It will handle financing and tenders and will operate the new plant. Initial funding is $500,000 for 2024.
The Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant went into service in 1980 and is due to be decommissioned in 2036. The Armenian government announced plans to build a new nuclear plant by that time back in April 2022.
