Armenian opposition activist to appeal jail sentence to top court
Political prisoner Narek Malyan's jail sentence will be appealed to the Armenian Court of Cassation, his lawyer Ruben Melikyan said on Friday.
The activist was sentenced to one year in prison for “hate propaganda” against Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's Civil Contract party in April this year. He has already spent almost 11 months in jail.
The Court of Appeals upheld Malyan's conviction on Friday.
“The defense insists that Malyan did not commit any crime, while the Prosecutor's Office seeks a jail term of 3 years and 3 months for him,” Melikyan wrote on Facebook.
“We’re going to appeal to the Court of Cassation. Regardless of its outcome, Narek Malyan will be released on 20 September 2024," the lawyer added.
