Artsakh man beaten up by police faces detention
The brother of Roman Yeritsyan, a lawyer from Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), is facing detention after the allegations of torture by police.
The man, Aram Yeritsyan, claimed to have been severely beaten by police officers in Yerevan on Thursday. His brother said the young man was arrested for illegally parking his car in the Armenian capital and was beaten up at the police station while resisting the police officers’ attempts to handcuff him.
The law-enforcement agency dealing with the preliminary probe into the case plans to ask a first instance court in Yerevan to remand Yeritsyan in custody later on Saturday.
“My brother is feeling sick as he has sustained burns and other injuries. However, he’s being taken to the court for a detention motion hearing. My brother and I need support from all of you,” the lawyer said in a video on Facebook, urging people to gather outside the Avan District Court of General Jurisdiction to press for his brother’s release.
Meanwhile, he said no police officer had been held to account for the brutality against the man.
