Armenia revises controversial history textbook
The Armenian Ministry of Education has revised a controversial history textbook that described Eastern Armenia's incorporation into Russia under the 1828 Treaty of Turkmenchay as an "annexation".
Tamara Sargsyan, head of the ministry’s General Education Department, told reporters on Friday that the term was edited after sparking controversy and criticism.
Earlier on Thursday, the Russian Foreign Ministry expressed strong disapproval of the textbook for 8th-grade students, stating that it “distorted” the developments of the late 18th and early 19th centuries in the South Caucasus.
The ministry urged Armenia’s government to stop the textbook distribution to Armenian schools.
