Armenian mayor handed down jail term
The mayor of the southeastern Armenian town of Goris, Arush Arushanyan, was sentenced to 1 year and 8 months in prison.
The Court of General Jurisdiction in Armenia’s Syunik Province on Tuesday partially granted a request from the Probation Service, replacing the previous 5-year ban from holding any local government office with imprisonment.
Arushanyan downplayed the jail sentence while speaking to reporters after the court hearing, vowing to continue his efforts towards the development of Goris.
The mayor was charged with abuse of office and assault strongly denied by him as politically motivated.
