Political analyst slams Pashinian's UN speech, photo with Erdogan
Political analyst Suren Surenyants hit out at Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan for his speech at the Summit of the Future held on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Monday, as well as his warm conversation and photo with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
“Symbols play a crucial role in politics, while Nikol Pashinyan is too naive to realize it,” Surenyants told Panorama.am in an interview on Thursday.
His comments came in response to a question whether Pashinyan’s photo with Erdogan with a broad smile on his face and the latter’s book in his hands several days before the fourth anniversary of the 2020 Artsakh war, in which Turkey provided strong diplomatic and military support to Azerbaijan, as well as a few days after the first anniversary of the forced displacement of Artsakh’s indigenous Armenian population, could be sending a political message to the world.
According to the political analyst, Pashinyan should have been very careful in his gestures and behavior at his meetings in New York.
“In addition to his failure to exercise caution, Pashinyan sent a clear message to the public that whatever happened in the past belongs in the past and we should think about the future. His UN speech was also about it. He could make it to the Guinness Book of Records for the anti-record he has set. Pashinyan is the only leader in the world who made a five-minute speech from the UN podium and did not mention his country once. Believe me, there has never been anything like this in the world history,” Surenyants underscored.
The analyst said that the photo of Pashinyan smiling broadly and clutching Erdogan's book, as well as his wife Anna Hakobyan's friendly communication with the Turkish first lady, are aimed at showing to the world that they do not focus on the past and bad relations with neighbors, but think about the future, which is “only in Pashinyan’s head”.
The political analyst said Pashinyan could next withdraw all Armenian lawsuits against Azerbaijan from international courts.
