Azerbaijan builds square, mosque in Artsakh's Shushi after destroying Armenian Genocide memorial
Azerbaijan has inaugurated a square on the territory of the Armenian Genocide memorial in the Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) town of Shushi. Construction of a mosque marking Azerbaijan’s victory in the 2020 war of aggression against Artsakh is also underway in the area, the Artsakh Monument Watch reports.
“On September 20, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev attended the inauguration of Flag Square in Azerbaijani-held Shushi, in the area of a monument commemorating the Armenian Genocide victims which was destroyed by Azeri forces back in 2021,” the watchdog said.
“Azerbaijani media reports suggest that a “victory museum” will be constructed near Flag Square to mark Azerbaijan's victory in the 44-day war. Incidentally, a new mosque of Shushi marking Azerbaijan’s “victory” is being built here after the Azeri president laid its foundation stone back in May 2021.
“After the 44-day war, Azerbaijan spotlights the capture of Shushi as a “symbol of victory in the war for the liberation of Karabakh”. Therefore, special importance is attached to the three complexes at the highest point of Shushi. These three structures, especially the mosque and the museum, symbolize the destruction of Artsakh and the ethnic cleansing of Armenians,” the report underlined.
