October 4 is World Animal Day
World Animal Day is observed annually on October 4 to raise awareness about animal welfare and promote the protection of all animals, whether they are pets, wildlife, or farm animals. The day aims to improve animal welfare standards globally and encourages individuals, organisations, and governments to take action to make a difference.
The day is a reminder that essential work must be done to address the plight of animals in the domestic and the wild world. The day is observed in different countries worldwide by organising various campaigns, contests, events, and workshops with the World Animal Day theme.
World Animal Day was first celebrated in Germany on March 24, 1925. It was started by Heinrich Zimmermann, a cynologist, who organised the first celebration at the Sports Palace in Berlin, which over 5,000 people reportedly attended.
