Armenian political analyst reacts to Aliyev's criticism of U.S.
Political analyst Ara Poghosyan has reacted to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s criticism of the U.S. after nearly 60 U.S. lawmakers urged Secretary of State Antony Blinken to "press for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners, hostages, and POWs, including ethnic Armenians, to enable a more conducive environment for successful diplomacy at COP29."
A letter signed by them said that provocative Azerbaijani statements toward Armenia risked undermining peace talks between the two countries.
Speaking in Jabrayil on Friday, Aliyev made fresh threats of military action against Armenia and hit out at the U.S. for the letter.
“America imposed sanctions against us in 1992, at a time when our territories were being lost. The sanctions were lifted in 2001,” Azerbaijani media quoted Aliyev as saying.
“Their occupation activities in Afghanistan had begun, a war of aggression had started, and they needed us. As long as they remained in Afghanistan, these sanctions were lifted by the U.S. president every year. However, when they fled Afghanistan – right in front of the whole world – these sanctions were reimposed against us. Is there a degree of ingratitude or not?” he added.
“The Baku dictator’s attempts to blatantly threaten the world powers indicate that either the little dictator feels that he is facing the fate of Gaddafi or is convinced that he will be the winner under the new world order,” Poghosyan wrote.
