Political analyst reacts to demands for Armenian football chief's resignation
Political analyst Suren Surenyants has reacted to the demands for the resignation of the Armenian Football Federation president after Armenia lost a National League match to North Macedonia 0-2 on Sunday.
“I am also a football fan and, of course, I understand the public discontent and the demand for the resignation of the Football Federation leadership. But I don't understand the comfort that we have created for [Defense Minister] Suren Papikyan and the chief of the military’s General Staff,” he wrote on Facebook on Monday, blaming the officials for the “weekly” noncombat deaths in the armed forces.
“Winning a football game is something pleasant that nurtures our dignity. But a sports defeat is not a tragedy, it does not lead to casualties and undermine national security.
“We are extremely responsible in innocuous matters but completely unaccountable when it comes to national security,” the analyst stated.
