MEPs to debate Azerbaijan's violation of human rights, relations with Armenia
On Tuesday, MEPs will debate with the European Commission the political and human rights situation in Azerbaijan, followed by a vote on a resolution on Thursday.
"The debate and resolution will also centre on Azerbaijan’s relations with neighbouring Armenia, with the Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan recently having stated that a peace deal between the two countries could be agreed before Baku hosts the UN’s COP29 climate conference next month," the European Parliament reported.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have been embroiled in a decades-long conflict, which culminated in Baku launching a military assault and seizing Nagorno-Karabakh last year, leading to an exodus of approximately 100,000 ethnic Armenians.
"At the time, MEPs strongly condemned the unjustified military attack as a gross violation of international law and called for the EU to reassess its relations with Azerbaijan, including in the energy field," it added.
