Analyst says parliament speaker's Artsakh remarks amount to 'crime report'
Political analyst Stepan Danielyan claims that the Armenian parliament speaker’s statements legitimizing the 2023 Azerbaijani attack on Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) amount to a “crime report”.
“Attacking Karabakh and occupying territories from Armenia are different things in terms of law,” Speaker Alen Simonyan told RFE/RL’s Armenian Service in an interview.
“Azerbaijan conducted an operation in Karabakh behind which it had at least three or four UN resolutions,” he added.
“The parliament speaker representing the ruling Civil Contract party reported a grave crime which left thousands of people dead, while more than a hundred thousand people became refugees. It can also be characterized as a crime against humanity,” Danielyan wrote on Facebook on Wednesday.
“Thus, from 2018, according to the parliament speaker, the authorities rejected Azerbaijan's “legitimate” demands and the proposals of the “international community”, violated UN resolutions, declined the proposal to stop the war, violated the ceasefire agreement and announced that “Artsakh is Armenia, period!” before the war, thus provoking the catastrophic war. Under criminal law, the Civil Contract leadership has to testify,” the analyst added.
