Expert: Outcome of Georgian elections decisive for Armenia
The ongoing elections in Georgia promise to be decisive for Armenia’s further engagement with the European Union, US foreign policy expert Suren Sargsyan claims.
Voters are going to the polls in Georgia on Saturday to cast their ballots in parliamentary elections seen as crucial for the Caucasus country's future direction toward either the EU or Russia.
The election pits the ruling Georgian Dream party, in power since 2012, against a divided opposition that champions integration with the West.
“Apart from everything, the Georgian elections will determine whether Armenia will ever share a border with the EU or not," Sargsyan wrote on Facebook.
“Today’s vote in Georgia and the 5 November U.S. presidential elections will greatly influence Armenia’s foreign policy. If Georgia’s ruling party wins reelection and former leaders regain power in the US, the entire region will undergo major shifts,” he stated, adding that it would also help increase Russia's influence in the South Caucasus.
