Mass repatriation of Artsakh Armenians impossible without political processes, lawyer says
Human rights lawyer Siranush Sahakyan, who represents Armenian prisoners of war and their families at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), claims the mass repatriation of the Artsakh Armenians cannot be ensured without political processes and mechanisms in place.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, she highlighted the UN and other resolutions could help step up pressure on Azerbaijan to ensure the safe return of Armenians to their homes.
“Resolutions are significant as they put pressure on a country for the setup of a mechanism with its international partners to ensure people’s safe and dignified return to their homeland,” the lawyer added.
Sahakyan underscored that the exercise of people’s right to repatriation contributes to the exercise of their right to self-determination.
“Self-determination is impossible without repatriation. The Artsakh people’s self-determination can only take place on the territory of Artsakh. The Artsakh Armenians cannot exercise the right to self-determination elsewhere,” she stated.
