Opposition lawmaker Tigran Abrahamyan blasted Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan’s latest genocide remarks as dangerous for Armenia’s security.

Speaking in the parliament on Thursday, Mirzoyan said pursing international recognition of the Armenian Genocide “is not a key foreign policy priority” for his ministry.

“Studying the tragic chapters in history, the Armenian Genocide, or making it a top priority is definitely not the agenda of the Foreign Ministry,” he added.

“International recognition of the Armenian Genocide is not only about restoration of historical justice, but also a matter of security for Armenia and the Armenian people,” Abrahamyan, a member of the opposition Pativ Unem faction, wrote on Facebook on Saturday.

“At different phases of the Armenian-Turkish normalization process, starting from the declaration of Armenia’s independence to the “football diplomacy” initiated by third Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, the issue always remained high on Armenia’s foreign policy agenda.

“The genocide denial is fraught with new tragedies. That’s why numerous countries and their parliaments have passed resolutions acknowledging and condemning the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by Ottoman Turkey.

“The Armenian foreign minister’s statements deal a new blow to Armenia’s security apart from promoting Turkey’s priorities,” the MP underscored.
