Trump reiterates support for Artsakh Armenians in phone call with Catholicos Aram I
Republican presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump on Friday phoned His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, to voice support for the Artsakh Armenians, the Armenian Catholicosate of Cilicia reported.
"President Trump expressed his appreciation for the leadership of His Holiness Aram I - who recently completed a tour of the United States - and reiterated his support for Artsakh’s Armenians and commitment to regional peace. He also praised the Armenian American community as strong, smart and dynamic," it said in a statement.
In response, Catholicos Aram I expressed his appreciation for Trump’s public statement of support for the Armenian people and stressed the vital importance of U.S. global leadership at this critical time.
"His Holiness conveyed his strong expectation that with a new Administration the United States will deal seriously with the Artsakh issue – particularly with respect to ensuring the right of return for Artsakh’s Armenians, international guarantees for security and status, and accountability for ethnic cleansing. Furthermore, His Holiness voiced his expectation of robust Armenian representation under a new Administration, and the need for open dialogue with the Armenian Eastern and Western Prelacies of the Armenian Apostolic Church of America and the Armenian National Committee of America," reads the statement.
