Opposition MP asks to postpone independence declaration debates
Opposition Hayastan faction MP Gegham Manukyan on Tuesday asked a parliamentary committee to postpone debates on a statement defending Armenia's Declaration of Independence, citing concerns that the ruling Civil Contract faction would vote against it.
Earlier in in October, the opposition Hayastan and Pativ Unem factions held special parliamentary hearings to promote the draft statement denouncing “any attempt to denigrate the key principles and national goals of Armenian statehood” enshrined in the declaration.
“To our information, the parliamentary majority is going to vote against the statement or abstain from voting,” Manukyan said at a meeting of the Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs.
"I propose to postpone debates on the draft statement for two months," he added.
