Trump's second term will be different, expert says
Donald Trump's second presidency will look nothing like the first, political analyst Suren Sargsyan claims.
“Times and realities are different, the international situation has changed, and the U.S. foreign policy has gone very far in many areas (including in the South Caucasus) during the four years of the Biden presidency. Even being the head of a global superpower, Trump cannot ignore these realities,” he wrote on Facebook on Friday.
The expert dismissed the claims that the new Trump administration is likely to pursue isolationism like the previous one and largely focus on domestic problems.
“I don't think that he will withdraw from NATO or dismantle it, as his detractors claim. He may simply change the rules of the game in relationships and funding principles,” Sargsyan stated.
“Trump has come back with greater legitimacy. He is largely the one the Republicans owe for gaining majority in the Senate and House of Representatives. He garnered nearly 4.5 million more votes than Harris, which gives him extraordinary legitimacy to act freely on the foreign policy front.
“Americans will be facing tough times and American society is unlikely to accept and overcome polarization. It will also be difficult for external actors, as Trump will bring new challenges for both his allies and adversaries.
“As for the Armenian authorities, there are naturally no expectations from them. However, the Armenian community, other lobbying organizations and the Armenian Apostolic Church have a lot of work to do, including achieving a legal assessment of the ethnic cleansing in Artsakh and its recognition by the United States,” the expert opined.
