Opposition councilors protest against transport fare hike in Yerevan
Opposition members of the Yerevan City Council on Tuesday protested against the planned hike in Yerevan’s public transport fares initiated by the municipal authorities.
Starting from January 1, the fare for a single ride will increase up to 300 drams from the current 100 drams.
At today’s meeting, the opposition Mother Armenia faction councilors holding placards surrounded its leader Manuk Sukiasyan as he delivered remarks from the City Council rostrum.
In his speech, Sukiasyan denounced the new measure as unjustified, unveiling his team’s initiative to make the public transport free for pensioners and persons with disabilities.
He urged all Yerevan residents to join an opposition petition against the transport fare hike.
“The signature collection so far indicates that people totally reject both the increase in public transportation fares and the team led by Nikol Pashinyan. We must jointly fight against the incumbent authorities and their disastrous policies," Sukiasyan stated.
