Expert: Armenian-Azeri talks somewhat stalled
Political analyst Suren Sargsyan claims the Armenian-Azerbaijani peace talks have somewhat stalled amid the change of government in the United States.
At an international forum in Yerevan on Saturday, he highlighted the outgoing Biden administration’s mediation efforts between Armenia and Azerbaijan, adding that the new U.S. administration has no experience in mediating negotiations between the two countries.
Sargsyan underlined that the U.S. foreign policy remained largely unchanged under different administrations and presidents, but pointed to Donald Trump’s record of unpredictability.
“Trump’s first presidency was marked by more changes in the U.S. foreign policy than many politicians and political scientists would expect,” he underscored.
Sargsyan believes the U.S.-mediated agreements between Armenia and Azerbaijan remain up in the air as Trump is unlikely to sign them immediately after coming to power.
“He has to bring his input to claim the role of someone who has settled the conflict and win a Nobel Prize,” he added, also criticizing the lack of independent foreign policy in Armenia.
“It’s crucial for your partners, allies, neighbors and enemies to understand what you are doing, to be predictable, pursue a reasonable foreign policy and set priorities correctly. Amid their absence, it’s difficult to say where we are heading to,” the expert remarked.
