Azerbaijan used COP29 to step up anti-Armenian propaganda, MP says
Armenia gained nothing in return for supporting Azerbaijan's bid to host the COP29 UN climate summit which concluded on Sunday, opposition lawmaker Tigran Abrahamyan claims.
In a social media post on Monday, the Hayastan faction deputy underlined that Armenia expected the international community to put pressure on Azerbaijan to return to constructive discussions on a bilateral peace treaty and to release at least some of Armenian prisoners illegally held in Baku.
“Azerbaijan used the major event to step up its anti-Armenian propaganda and put forward new demands, pinning the aggressor label on Armenia,” Abrahamyan wrote.
“Moreover, during COP29 Azerbaijan filed another lawsuit against Armenia at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, while the issue of prisoners remained up in the air. The conference was not only used for greenwashing Azerbaijan's image, but also strengthening its positions in general,” he added.
Abrahamyan again criticized the pro-government majority in the Armenian parliament for blocking an opposition-drafted statement calling for the immediate release of all Armenian prisoners of war and hostages held in Azerbaijan.
“The ruling parliamentary faction rejected the initiative, thus allowing the Azerbaijani leadership to block debates on the matter on other platforms,” the MP said.
