Deputy Yerevan mayor seeks probe after bus drivers’ strike
Deputy Yerevan Mayor Suren Grigoryan has requested Armenia’s chief prosecutor to launch an investigation into potential legal violations by the striking drivers in Yerevan.
A large number of Yerevan bus drivers walked off the job on Tuesday morning, demanding better working conditions and a pay rise. The Yerevan City Hall has already fired 18 protesting bus drivers.
Speaking at a press conference, Grigoryan alleged that the strike could have been pre-planned.
“In the current situation, it was decided to apply the most severe punishment provided by the Labor Code – dismissal,” the deputy mayor said, adding more drivers involved in the strike could be sacked.
“There are proper procedures for raising work-related issues, which cannot come at the expense of citizens. We will take all necessary measures to settle the situation as quickly as possible and prevent its recurrence in the future," Grigoryan said.
