Yerevan bus drivers go on strike
A large number of bus drivers in Yerevan walked off the job on Tuesday morning, demanding better working conditions and a pay rise.
The strike left tens of thousands of people, including those rushing to work, without transportation.
In a Facebook post, the Yerevan mayor’s spokesperson, Hayk Kostanyan, denounced the move, saying the drivers went on strike without prior notice.
"As you know, we have repeatedly informed the public that the introduction of the unified ticketing system has significantly reduced the shadow turnover, and this process will continue," Kostanyan wrote.
“Although the work-related issues raised by the drivers were regularly addressed and they were told that working conditions would improve as shadow turnover decreased, a large number of drivers once again put forward unreasonable demands coupled with blackmail,” he said, adding the striking drivers will be held to account.
