Armenian expert: US has clear interests in Syria
Political analyst Suren Sargsyan has outlined the specific U.S. interests in Syria following the capture of Damascus by Syrian rebel groups and the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government.
“The U.S. interests in Syria are absolutely clear. If we do not go into details, we will see the following picture:
1. Russia, the main global competitor of the United States which was involved in the Syrian conflict and had military presence there, left Syria.
2. Iran, America's primary adversary, withdrew from Syria.
3. Assad, whose regime the U.S. also considered hostile, was ousted from Syria.
4. Turkey, a strategic ally of the U.S. (albeit a bad ally, but still an ally), significantly increased its zone of influence. Incidentally, it was the efforts of Russia, Iran and Turkey that reduced the U.S. role in the conflict a few years ago.
5. Israel, the number one strategic ally of the U.S., was also engaged in the conflict and had specific interests, and is set to increase its influence in Syria,” he wrote on Facebook on Monday.
“In other words, U.S. strategic allies Israel and Turkey (with all their proxies), as well as the Kurds who are also considered U.S. allies, have now positioned themselves as the most influential foreign actors in Syria. Of course, not everything is under control, but there are no more global adversaries in this game and at this stage,” the expert stated.
