Armenian delegate says no decision on withdrawal of lawsuits against Azerbaijan
Yeghishe Kirakosyan, Armenia’s representative on international legal matters, refused to comment on rumors about disagreements between him and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan over the possible withdrawal of Armenia's lawsuits against Azerbaijan from international courts.
“I’d refrain from any comment. I cannot share my personal opinion here,” he told reporters on Monday.
At the same time, the delegate stated that Yerevan had to decision to withdraw its international lawsuits against Baku at this point.
The Armenian government has filed lawsuits in the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing Azerbaijan of committing war crimes and violating the rights of Armenian prisoners.
Kirakosyan claimed that the return of Armenian prisoners required political, rather than legal efforts.
“The legal proceedings are more likely to ensure legal safeguards for those held in Baku,” he added.
