Armenian MP: Situation in Syria could remain unresolved
Opposition lawmaker Tigran Abrahamyan says the military and political situation in Syria may not have been finally resolved after its seizure by rebels and the end of President Bashar al-Assad's rule.
“While some Syrian groups, terrorist organizations and the forces backing them are celebrating their victory, Israel is expanding its territory further into Syria,” the Pativ Unem faction MP wrote on Facebook on Saturday.
“On the other hand, how can Syria's territory be protected when Israel has destroyed almost all the military resources of the Syrian army, from the navy to the air defense systems?
“As it often happens, the change of power in Syria was far from being a purely internal political event, not to mention that even now some regional and international centers are trying to cement their gains, while the rest are already preparing for revenge or, at the very least, to prevent the final resolution of the situation,” Abrahamyan stated.
“In Armenia too, in 2018, the forces that came to power and their external backers took the field with majestic slogans of defending the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity, calling the change of power a historic victory, while two years later Armenia and Artsakh faced a brutal war. In the following years, vast swaths of Armenia’s sovereign territory were occupied and Artsakh was Azerbaijaniized, leaving thousands of victims, wounded and forcibly displaced persons,” the MP added.
