Expert: Disclose of Artsakh peace plans would be 'political suicide' for Pashinyan
Political analyst Suren Surenyants has hailed former Armenian President Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s response to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s claims on the Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) negotiation process.
Pashinyan stated on Monday that all peace plans drafted by the mediators from 1994 onwards focused on “the return of Nagorno-Karabakh to Azerbaijan”. He said that his “big mistake” was not to make it clear to the Armenian people after coming to power in 2018. Pashinyan also challenged the three former Armenian presidents to debate on the matter, but the latter rejected the proposal.
Ter-Petrosyan dismissed Pashinyan’s “lies” on the Artsakh negotiations and urged him to disclose all the peace plans drafted by the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs.
In a social media post on Thursday, Surenyants stated that it would signal “political suicide” for Nikol Pashinyan.
“The move would make it clear that in 2019-2020, Pashinyan had a real chance to avert war, keep Artsakh Armenian and preserve its sovereignty, but illusions of never giving up “an inch of land” and adventurism outweighed pragmatic statesmanship, paving the way for a national catastrophe,” the expert wrote.
Surenyants argued that Pashinyan's political agenda continues to be influenced by adventurism "putting Armenian statehood at risk."
