Ex-deputy chief of Armenian army denies negligence charges
Lieutenant General Tiran Khachatryan, a national hero of Armenia, denies the charges of negligence during the 2020 Artsakh war, his lawyers report.
Khachatryan, who formerly served as the first deputy chief of the Armenian military’s General Staff, was arrested on Saturday morning. Prosecutors have requested the court to approve his pre-trial detention, pending a decision.
“The charges against Tiran Khachatryan, strongly denied by him, (negligence by a military officer during the martial law period) are related to certain circumstances of the 44-day war,” the legal team said in a statement.
“Due to the ongoing preliminary probe and military secrecy at this stage, we cannot provide further details. However, we reiterate that Tiran Khachatryan categorically rejects the charges brought against him. In connection with these allegations, he has repeatedly provided comprehensive testimony during the preliminary investigation, without obstructing the process in any way,” reads the statement.
The lawyers promised to provide further updates on the case.
