Human metapneumovirus causes relatively mild symptoms, WHO says
“Amid reports of rising wintertime respiratory infections in China – including human metapneumovirus – and the impact on health system there, health authorities say the scale and intensity remain lower than around this time a year ago,” noted Dr Hans Kluge, the WHO Regional Director for Europe.
What is human metapneumovirus (HMPV) - the pathogen currently in the news coming from China?
It is a fairly common respiratory virus that usually causes relatively mild symptoms like cough, fever, nasal congestion and wheezing, WHO Armenia reports.
Severe cases though can lead to pneumonia, especially in infants, the elderly and those with underlying conditions.
