Armenian government backs EU accession bid
The Armenian government has expressed support for a legislative initiative to launch a process for the country’s accession to the European Union, with the proposal pending parliamentary hearings.
Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan presented the draft law at a cabinet meeting on Thursday, highlighting growing and dynamic relations between Armenia and the EU in recent years.
Mirzoyan pointed out the EU’s strong political support for democracy in Armenia, readiness to contribute to enhancing Armenia’s economic resilience and its efforts to bolster the country’s security environment.
“Also, you have stated in the European Parliament that Armenia is ready to be as close to the EU as the EU deems it possible. We have also seen signs that this is possible,” he said, addressing Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
Pashinyan, for his part, reiterated that Armenia can only join the EU through a referendum if the decision garners the required number of votes. He emphasized the need to discuss and develop a joint "roadmap" with the EU on Armenia’s accession process.
