Pashinyan could recall CSTO after Aliyev's remarks, top Russian official says
Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev claims that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan could recall the country's membership in the CSTO in light of the recent threats made by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
"I wouldn't be surprised if Pashinyan, who recently shaved off his beard, recalls that Armenia is a member of the CSTO. Alternatively, considering the Armenian leadership's intention to get closer to the European Union, Armenia could directly ask for support from the EU, which is known for providing both financial and military support to the countries seeking membership. The EU's involvement in Ukraine offers a strong precedent for such actions," Medvedev told RIA Novosti on Thursday.
In a televised interview on Tuesday, Aliyev reiterated his plans to open a land corridor through Armenia to Nakhichevan.
“The Zangezur corridor must and will be opened. The sooner they understand it, the better,” Aliyev said, warning that Armenia should not “act as a geographical barrier between Turkey and Azerbaijan.”
Aliyev also accused Armenia of obstructing Baku's peace aspirations, calling the country a “fascist state.” “Fascism must be destroyed. Either the Armenian leadership will eliminate it, or we will,” he added.
