Armenian FM, EU envoy discuss security situation in South Caucasus
Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan on Friday had a meeting with the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia, Magdalena Grono.
The interlocutors discussed a wide range of issues on the Armenia-EU partnership agenda. They addressed the achievements recorded during the previous year, the progress of discussions on developing a new partnership agenda, and upcoming activities. Referring to the draft bill “On the launch of the process of Armenia’s accession to the EU”, Mirzoyan noted that the positive conclusion given by the Armenian government on Thursday was in line with the dynamics of deepening cooperation between Armenia and the EU and its member states, as well as with the European aspirations of Armenia’s citizens, the Foreign Ministry reported.
Ararat Mirzoyan and Magdalena Grono exchanged views on the prospects for further broadening of the partnership, taking into account the opportunities provided through the existing tools. Among other mechanisms, the importance of the functioning of the EU civilian mission in Armenia was emphasized.
"At the meeting, the security situation in the South Caucasus, current challenges and necessary steps towards effectively addressing them were touched upon. Minister Mirzoyan emphasized that in line with the vision of normalization of relations with neighbors and establishment of peace in the region, the government of Armenia is making efforts to reach mutually acceptable solutions and ensure lasting stability. In this context, the Foreign Minister of Armenia presented Armenia's proposals aimed at finalization of the treaty on normalization of the relations with Azerbaijan, as well as the proposals aimed at unblocking regional communications. Humanitarian issues were also touched upon," the ministry said.
