Opposition politician: Pashinyan leading Armenia to 'capitulation'
Opposition politician Eduard Sharmazanov has denounced Prime Minister Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s claims about “historical Armenia”, comparing them to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s latest remarks on Armenia.
“Pashinyan’s reckless ambitions know no limits,” Sharmazanov, a senior member of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), told reporters on Monday.
“We are dealing with a man who likens himself to King Pap. Now, after reading a single academic volume, he has concluded that these volumes were written from the perspective of historical Armenia, rather than that of the Republic of Armenia. People spent years reading thousands of volumes to produce scholarly work, yet Nikol, after reading just one, has decided that "Armenian History" should be renamed "History of Armenia"," he stated.
Sharmazanov pointed out that Pashinyan’s claims challenge a long list of respected figures and institutions, including esteemed historian Movses Khorenatsi, the Armenian Academy of Sciences, the Armenian History Chairs at Yerevan State University (YSU) and Armenian State Pedagogical University, as well as prominent scholars Mikayel Chamchian, Hovhannes Draskhanakertzi and others.
“It’s impossible to list all those this man is disregarding,” Sharmazanov said, dismissing Pashinyan’s assertions as “absurd".
The opposition figure also drew parallels between the “fascist Armenia” language used by Aliyev and Pashinyan’s notion of “historical Armenia”. He argued that both are essentially referring to the same thing.
“Aliyev calls Armenia "fascist", referring to the country that existed for 30 years and defeated him, rooted in the ideology of the Karabakh Movement, the Declaration of Independence and references to Western Armenia and Mount Ararat. Meanwhile, Nikol Pashinyan claims that Western Armenia includes regions like Armavir and Talin, inventing a new geographical term. This is pure ignorance. The term "Western Armenia" dates back to 387 AD and is even used in international documents condemning the Armenian Genocide,” the politician added.
In conclusion, Sharmazanov emphasized that Nikol Pashinyan is leading Armenia not to peace, but to "capitulation".
