Former ombudsperson condemns UN silence on Armenian prisoners held in Baku
Former Armenian Human Rights Defender Larisa Alaverdyan has urged the United Nations to take tangible actions to secure the release of Armenian prisoners illegally held in Azerbaijan.
“The UN has clear responsibilities. On behalf of all those gathered here, I demand that the UN take concrete steps and honor its commitments,” she said at a protest outside the UN office in Yerevan on Friday.
Alaverdyan claimed that Azerbaijan is holding Armenians as hostages for political leverage amid the "UN silence emboldening Baku."
"Azerbaijan equates the national liberation struggle of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and its pursuit of self-determination with terrorism,” the ex-official said. “It’s our duty to continuously raise our voices and sound the alarm through persistent actions. Where the government fails to act, the public must step in to fill the void.”
“Shame on you! You bear a disgraceful stigma on your foreheads!" Alaverdyan said, addressing UN officials.
