Armenia has no plans to quit EAEU, parliament speaker says
Armenia has no plans to leave the Moscow-led Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan claims.
“The EAEU is an economically beneficial organization for Armenia, and we have no plans to exit it,” he told reporters on Tuesday.
Simonyan dispelled Russia’s concerns over Armenia’s possible membership in the European Union.
His comments came after the Armenian government approved a bill on the “start of a process of Armenia's accession to the European Union” last week. The bill has yet to undergo parliamentary hearings.
Moscow deplored the move, with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk calling it “the start of Armenia's withdrawal from the EAEU.”
Simonyan emphasized that Armenia’s pursuit of EU membership would not jeopardize its cooperation with the EAEU.
“If Russia sees any problems here, the two countries can discuss them and find solutions,” the speaker said. “However, Armenia is a sovereign state, and it's up to Armenia to decide which laws to adopt, what is in its best interest and what is not.”
