Expert calls for replacement of Armenian ambassador to U.S.
Political analyst Suren Sargsyan has urged Armenia’s authorities to appoint a new ambassador to the United States under the Donald Trump’s administration.
In a social media post on Wednesday, Sargsyan criticized the Armenian leadership for its overt support for the Democratic Party, suggesting it may have alienated Republicans.
“It's not ruled out that Ambassador Lilit Makunts assured the Armenian leadership that [ Democrat Kamala] Harris would win the elections. This was a fatal miscalculation, and, naturally, there was no “plan B” in place. The Republican Party is well aware of this partiality. Makunts’ stance towards Republicans is so evident that posts about her participation in their events, including official ceremonies, are absent from the embassy's Facebook page,” Sargsyan wrote.
Appointed in 2021, Makunts insisted her term be set at four years. “Ambassadors are not typically appointed for fixed terms,” the expert noted. “The standard is a 2+1 arrangement, with the recall period being a matter of political discretion.”
Sargsyan highlighted that back in 1994 when the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) faced suspension in Armenia, the government and ARF leadership managed to cooperate in Washington for the benefit of Armenia. He credited then-Ambassador Armen Shugaryan and the ANCA (Armenian National Committee of America) for putting aside their major political differences to work effectively.
“In contrast, the current ambassador has failed to cooperate with this influential organization in Washington,” he stated.
Sargsyan further emphasized the potential for the Armenian Apostolic Church to engage effectively with the Trump administration given its strong advocacy for Christian values.
