Armenian parliament likely to pass EU accession bill, Pashinyan says
The Armenian parliament will highly likely adopt the bill seeking to launch the process of Armenia’s accession to the European Union, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said at a panel discussion during the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday.
“It was an initiative by the civil society, they presented the bill on launching the process of accession to the EU. Our government endorsed it, and there is high probability that our parliament will adopt the bill, which will mean that we are launching a process of being closer to the EU. Why do we want to be closer to the EU, because we are a democracy. When you are a democracy, you want to be closer to democracies, because the opposite would be illogical,” Armenpress quoted him as saying.
On January 9, the cabinet approved the bill calling for Armenia to launch a bid to join the EU. The bill, which is set to be discussed in parliament, was initiated by several civic organizations through a petition which garnered enough votes to be considered as a bill.
