Military-political situation 'fraught with significant threats', Armenian MP warns
Although Armenia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (FIS) assessed the risk of a large-scale Azerbaijani attack on Armenia as low in 2025 in a report released on Thursday, the threats outlined in it suggest the opposite, opposition lawmaker Tigran Abrahamyan claims.
In a social media post on Friday, the Pativ Unem faction MP highlighted the delays in the Armenia-Azerbaijan normalization process and Azerbaijan’s dangerous narratives against Armenia’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. They include references to so-called “Western Azerbaijan and Western Azerbaijanis,” accusations of “Armenia’s militarization,” “revanchism,” and demands for the “Zangezur corridor”.
“While the FIS claims it is assessing whether these narratives are being used to legitimize Azerbaijan’s use of force against Armenia, the threats are already evident. Simply, the situation seems to have been downplayed,” Abrahamyan wrote.
He also called attention to the statements made by Armenia’s security chief, who expressed concern over Azerbaijan's fresh threats, extensive arms acquisitions and intensive military exercises.
“The Security Council secretary’s comments and the FIS report indicate that despite the Armenian leadership’s ongoing policy of appeasement toward Azerbaijan, the military-political situation remains fraught with significant threats and growing uncertainties,” Abrahamyan emphasized.
