
Hundreds of self-harm cases reported in Armenian prisons in 2024
Six convicts and six detainees died in Armenian prisons in 2024, the Penitentiary Service of the Justice Ministry told Panorama.am. As of January 24, 2025, four more deaths were recorded, including two suicides.
"All deaths undergo forensic medical examination as part of criminal proceedings," the Penitentiary Service said.
Last year, 626 incidents of self-harm or self-mutilation were reported among 205 prisoners, including 101 verbal threats of self-harm. As of 24 January 2025, 17 self-harm cases involving 15 individuals were recorded in Armenian prisons.
Additionally, 18 prisoners have staged 21 hunger strikes this year, protesting against court orders, prison transfers and inadequate medical care.
