Expert: Turkey, Azerbaijan seek opening of 'Zangezur corridor' as key strategic goal
The opening of the so-called "Zangezur corridor," also known as the "Meghri corridor," remains a key strategic objective for Turkey and Azerbaijan in the coming years, Turkologist Varuzhan Geghamyan claims.
In a Facebook post on Friday, he argued that achieving this goal would serve three major purposes for the Turkish-Azerbaijani duo:
1. Establishing a direct land border between Turkey and Azerbaijan, which would make Turkey the dominant power in the South Caucasus.
2. Connecting Turkey to the Turkic world and turning it into a regional superpower (a goal tied to “neo-Panturkism”).
3. Cutting off southern Armenia from the rest of the country, effectively turning it into an enclave, putting us in complete dependence on Turkey and consistently destroying us.
According to Geghamyan, Turkey is the primary architect, driving force and beneficiary of the corridor plan –an initiative Armenian generations have resisted for over a century.
"Now, it is our turn. Granting Turkey and Azerbaijan access to this route in any form would mark the fall of Syunik, then all of Armenia," he wrote.
