Yerevan residents boycott public transport fare increase
Yerevan residents are boycotting the public transport fare increase, heeding calls from public figures and politicians.
Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan has announced that bus fares will rise from 100 to 150 drams starting February 1, 2025. Initially, municipal authorities had proposed a fare increase to 300 drams, but following public backlash, the fare was revised to 150 drams.
"I just paid the driver 100 drams and got off the bus. I have no problem with the driver, but I refuse to pay an extra 50 drams. We simply cannot afford it given the current financial situation," said one resident.
"I’ll pay 100 drams because that’s what I’ve prepared for. If we stand together, this boycott will succeed. This price hike feels like legal robbery," said another citizen.
"This is a disgrace, transport fares have increased by 50%. In many countries, public transport is free for pensioners. This is unacceptable and we need to seriously think about it," a third resident added.
