JD Vance's speech at the Munich Security Conference felt as if the US was "trying to pick a fight" with Europe, the EU's foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has said.

"Listening to that speech, they try to pick a fight with us and we don't want to a pick a fight with our friends," Kallas said.

The former Estonian prime minister added that allies should be focusing on bigger threats like Russia's aggression on Ukraine, Sky News reported.

During his speech at the conference, Vance took aim at several countries, including the UK and said he feared the "retreat of Europe from some of its most fundamental values" shared with the US.

He doubled down on his criticism of European democracy and said it was not always clear what happened to some of the Cold War's winners.

Vance's speech, and his passing mention of the Russian war in Ukraine, comes at a time of heightened concern and uncertainty over the Trump administration's foreign policy.
