Opposition MP: Armenia drifting toward Turkey, not EU
Opposition MP Tigran Abrahamyan has dismissed the Armenian government’s claims of pursuing EU membership, calling them mere political bluff.
"I was following the panel discussion on EU enlargement held on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, which featured the prime ministers of Albania and North Macedonia, as well as EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos," he wrote on Facebook on Monday.
The Pativ Unem faction MP underscored that during the 1–1.5-hour discussion, Armenia and its EU accession process were not mentioned at all. Moreover, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, as a "pioneer" of EU membership, was not even among the speakers. Instead, the discussion focused on the potential EU accession of Western Balkan countries, including Albania, Montenegro and Serbia, as well as Moldova and Ukraine.
“Given the recent deterioration in relations between the EU and Georgia, even Georgia was mentioned, but there was not a single word about Armenia – not even a formal acknowledgment or a passing reference," Abrahamyan said.
"Isn't it strange that a discussion about the EU’s future, its prospects and potential expansion made not a single reference to a country where the parliamentary majority passed a bill on EU membership as part of its empty promises and political bluff?
"The Armenian authorities' 'determination' to sell their citizens on the idea of joining the EU, touting it as a path to a brighter future, has been met with complete indifference from EU officials. This once again indicates the Armenian leadership's reckless foreign policy.
"In reality, Armenia is not moving toward the EU, but rather toward Turkey in its external alignment and renunciation policy, as well as in its failure to maintain relations with all major centers of power," he stated.
